How to deal with anger

deal with anger

I’ve been reading a great book lately called ‘Buddhism for Mothers’ and there is a whole section on anger. I’ve never really been an angry person but every now and then I have a client with issues around anger so I thought I’d share a little of what I found. Here are a few strategies to help deal with anger:

1. Write it all out. The process of writing down what your thinking and why can be very cathartic and really help to clear up your thoughts and clarify what it is your actually angry about.

2. Meditate on it. By sitting quietly and calmly and thinking through the problem your angry about sometimes you can gain new insight. The point is to step out of the anger and get into a place of curiosity to take a new perspective on the anger.

3. Congnative Behavioural Therapy. Otherwise known as CBT or ‘talk therapy’. The idea being that you talk through your anger with someone that’s not judgemental or involved in any way in the situation. Essentially it’s more about you talking and getting the issues out than asking for their advice or opinions.

4. Change behaviours. Feeling angry often plays out in our behaviours, so rather than acting like an angry person and responding to situations, choose to change your behaviour to something positive. Perhaps each time you get angry you could go for a walk or throw a ball for a dog. In this way you give your body and mind an oppurtunity to move past the anger naturally.
