I was at an event a few weeks ago and heard a speaker talk on the difference between success and significance. It made such sense that I’d like to share it with you.
He described success as being a personal achievement. You have reached your goals, achieved a certain level of wealth, status, lifestyle, material possessions or whatever you were pursuing. However, that success is all about you.
Significance is about who you have become and the role you play in other peoples lives, in a community or in making the world a better place. Significance can not happen personally, but must happen within a greater context of the world in which we live.
I’ve always had a feeling that success seemed a little ‘misused’ as a term. To me, true success is about living your life the way that you consciously choose. It’s less about the money you amass and more about living out your values. When I think about it though, that’s still a very personal and private definition.
Now however, I’d like to look at a blended approach to success, bringing in not just living by my values, but living by my values… in order to make the world a better place. Now that is a definition of success that I could work towards!
